Okavango Delta
Okavango Delta (often misspelled as "Okakgango") is one of the world's most extraordinary natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Botswana. It's the largest inland delta on Earth, where the Okavango River fans out into a labyrinth of permanent and seasonal channels, islands, lagoons, floodplains, and mopane woodlands—creating a lush oasis in the middle of the arid Kalahari Desert. Spanning about 15,000–18,000 km² at peak flood (roughly the size of Switzerland), it supports an incredibly diverse ecosystem with some of Africa's highest wildlife densities.

The Delta is unique because it floods from Angolan highlands rains (peaking around June–August), not local rainfall—making it a "reversed" seasonal pattern compared to most African wetlands.

Key Wildlife Highlights
The Okavango is a year-round wildlife haven, with all the **Big Five** (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo; rhino rare but possible in some areas). Expect:
  • Massive elephant and buffalo herds (often hundreds bathing or crossing channels).
  • Thriving predators: lions (big prides), leopards (tree specialists), African wild dogs (healthy packs, especially north), cheetahs, hyenas.
  • Plains game: red lechwe (semiaquatic antelope), impala, tsessebe, giraffe, zebra, warthog.
  • Hippos and crocodiles dominating the waterways.
  • Over 500 bird species—birding paradise with fish eagles, herons, wattled cranes, and migrants.

Top Activities
  • Mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) excursions: Silent, eco-friendly gliding through lily-covered channels (best with high water).
  • Game drives (day and night in private concessions): 4x4 exploration of islands and floodplains.
  • Boat safaris on larger lagoons/rivers.
  • Walking safaris (guided, for close-up tracking).
  • Helicopter/scenic flights (for aerial views of the Delta's patterns).
  • Fishing (tigerfish in some areas, seasonal).

Big Tom Private Safaris provide the most authentic and adventurous ways to experience Botswana's wilderness. Unlike staying at fixed lodges or permanent camps... Read More
