Chobe National Park
Chobe National Park is one of Botswana's premier wildlife destinations and the country's first national park (established in 1968). Located in northern Botswana near the borders with Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia, it's famous for its massive elephant populations (often estimated at 50,000–120,000, one of the highest concentrations in Africa) and diverse ecosystems. The park spans about 11,700 km²(4,500 sq mi), making it Botswana's third-largest protected area.

The park is divided into four main regions:
  • Chobe Riverfront(northern boundary along the Chobe River): The most accessible and popular area, especially from Kasane town. This is where you'll see huge herds of elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, and waterbirds coming to drink, especially in the dry season.
  • Savuti (central): Known for dramatic landscapes, including the Savuti Channel and Marsh; excellent for predators like lions and leopards, plus seasonal migrations.
  • Linyanti (northwest): Remote wetlands with similar riverine wildlife.
  • Nogatsaa/Ngwezumba Pans (interior): More off-the-beaten-path with pans that attract game in the wet season.

Key Attractions and Wildlife
Chobe is often called the "Land of the Giants" due to its elephant herds, but it's also home to the Big Five (elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, though rhino are rare/absent). Expect abundant plains game like zebra, giraffe, impala, waterbuck, puku antelope, and warthog. Predators thrive here, and birdlife is exceptional with over 450 species.

Top Activities
  • Boat safaris/cruises on the Chobe River (especially at sunset): One of the best ways to view wildlife up close—elephants bathing, hippos yawning, and birds in flight.
  • Game drives (morning/afternoon, including night drives in some areas): Land-based exploration of the riverfront and interior.
  • Walking safaris (in permitted zones).
  • Day trips often combine boat and land options.
